What is Endodontic Treatment?
Endodontic treatment is often referred to as root canal treatment. The treatment is a modern day treatment that aims to save infected or damaged teeth that many years ago would have had to be removed. Endodontic treatment is an important way of saving precious teeth and protecting your smile.
Why Do I Need Endodontic Treatment in Essex?
Endodontic therapy or root canal therapy is required when the pulp (which contains the blood supply to a tooth which keeps it alive) becomes infected or damaged.
This can be the result of a number of situations such as:
- When a tooth has been broken or fractured and has exposed the inside of the tooth and the pulp to the bacteria that is present within the mouth
- When a tooth has been injured in an accident which has led to the blood supply of the tooth being damaged
- Advanced tooth decay that has meant that the infection has damaged the inside of the tooth
- Teeth with large fillings
- Gum disease (periodontal disease) that has been so acute that it has caused an infection within the pulp of the tooth
In many cases the situations outlined above would involve you experiencing a degree of pain as the pulp inside the tooth deteriorates. These can vary from sensitivity to either hot and cold drinks or foods, pain when you bite something or severe toothache.
Who Will Treat Me and Help Save My Teeth?
Gan, our endodontic practitioner, has undergone advanced training in the field of root canal therapy and obtained his Master’s degree in Endodontics from Guy’s Hospital in 1999. Since then, in 2008, he has gone on to teach mainly final year students at Bart’s and The London Dental School and also helped to run the Undergraduate Training Course in Endodontics.
His objective is to try and help you to save your tooth by dealing with the infected tissue in the root canals of the affected tooth. In using high-intensity light magnification, the infected material from the root canals can be effectively dealt with and your tooth returned to good health without the need to have it removed.
Sean Khine has a special interest in Endodontics and achieved his Master’s degree in 2014. He is a part-time postgraduate lecturer at Royal London Hospital/Queen Mary University of London.
Sean has a specific interest in vital pulp therapy, root canal re-treatment, conservative endodontics and orofacial pain.
Your Treatment
Once the infected pulp has been removed you should normally find immediate relief if you have been experiencing severe pain. The inside of your tooth is then cleaned to help reduce any infection. After we are sure that all of the infection has disappeared the root canal (which is where the diseased pulp has been) of your tooth will be sealed with a special material that will prevent the bacteria from entering and infecting the tooth again. To avoid teeth breaking following root canal therapy it is important to have the tooth crowned by your own dentist, preferably one to two months after treatment. This is something we offer at our dentists in Essex, so why not get in touch for more information today?
SUCCESSFUL ENDODONTIC TREATMENT MEANS THAT THE OUTER SURFACE OF YOUR TOOTH CAN BE RESTORED TO COMPLETE YOUR SMILE.
